Shenzhen Maker Faire, June 19–21
theMake.club is going to the Maker Faire! This is an international exhibition of DIY invention and creativity. Starting in California, it is now big in Shenzhen!
We are working directly with the Maker Faire organizers, and have 10 spaces for student presentations.
You can apply for a space with Ms. Leung or Mr. Simpson. You will get a space #, 4 hour timeslot, and date. Students will present their project, with our help, at the event to many attendees, and also share their presentation with students in USA makerspaces.
If you do not have a project, you should still come to the faire too — see and learn! Stop by our booth, we will be giving faire tours to children, or explore on your own!
Go to www.makerfaireshenzhen.com for directions and more details. See www.makerfaire.com for info about the USA Makerfaires!

Why teachers love the Makerfaire
The Maker Faire has a huge impact on childrens’ ability to innovate with technology. Creativity matched with engineering is both fun and important for success.
A student will succeed if they have:
- The imagination to dream up an idea.
- The technical skills to design that idea.
- The speaking ability to convince people of that idea’s value.
Being part of a makerspace, and presenting a completed project at a Makerfaire, helps students learn these skills.
What is the Maker Faire?
We call it the Greatest Show (& Tell) on Earth. Maker Faire is part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new! As a celebration of the Maker Movement, it’s a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness.
Faire gathers together tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, food artisans, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. Makers come to show their creations and share their learnings. Attendees flock to Maker Faire to glimpse the future and find the inspiration to become Makers themselves.

Our Team
Mentors Ben Simpson & Carrie Leung have worked in high tech companies in San Francisco, and are now in Shenzhen sharing their love of DIY, innovation, and entrepreneurship. With them, students will have an opportunity to learn confidence, creativity, and how to work with American and international teammates.
Students
Our students come from the US, China, England, Hong Kong, Australia — all over the world. Classes are taught in English, and we also provide separate English tutoring courses.
For young kids (ages 5–8) we focus on simple projects. The kids build their own toys with DIY toy kits, draw out their ideas, and create their unique toys using materials like clay, wooden sticks, and paper. Instructors then help them add electronics.
For older kids (9+ years) we teach them how to build custom robots and electronics! They then present those projects to international tech entrepreneurs, learning both engineering and business skills.

Partners
We partner with American schools; the students present projects to each other during video calls, learn about each other’s classroom experience, and have an opportunity to collaborate on design.
- Shenzhen American International School, Shenzhen
- Camelot Elementary School, Annandale, Virginia
- De Vargas Elementary School, San Jose, California
We also receive support from:
- Robotics and engineering firm L2F, a California company.
- Software and manufacturing firm Size and Color, a Hong Kong company.
