WE ARE A MAKERSPACE AND A MOVEMENT

Our mission is to provide access to quality, relevant education focused on integrating design, technology, and community. Because when people have access to great spaces and resources, they make great things.

What we do

SteamHead has quickly grown and taken shape both as an organization of people and as a space. We are a network of people, spaces, and events who collaborate to improve equity in education as the path forward.

Makerspace

SteamHead Makerspace provides an equitable, free and open space, tools, advice, and community for students as well as maker educators.

MakeFashion Edu

Program where students combine fashion and technology in an outfit that they design to express themselves.

Neighborhood Earth

Our outreach and community activism around the world, including teaching free classes for under-served students, and conducting training sessions.

Productions

Documenting and sharing our student’s stories, as well as to sharing what we have learned with educators everywhere.

it is personal to us

This is the story we’ve lived, and this is a story we see in everyone we have had the privilege of working with. These communities have welcomed us in and laid bare their weaknesses and fears so that we can strive for something better together. We learned what we had in common. So many people have the capability and desire to do good, but they lacked resources and were punished for even trying.

This issue, access to resources, became a cornerstone of SteamHead because it is the foundation that makes everything else possible.

The communities we serve include school children at a variety of participating schools in California, Arizona, and Guangdong. We have a particular focus to include the children of migrant workers. Teachers and parents from these same areas, as well as a large online audience follow our results alongside museums, government researchers, hackers, and fellow makerspaces.

OUR INITIATIVES

Makerspace

We are focused on community-level efforts, and seek out individuals who want to make an impact within their local environment. The space is free for anyone in the education community, and we encourage everyone, in the world, to be a part of that!

MakeFashion Edu

MakeFashion Edu is a joint project by SteamHead and MakeFashion. MakeFashion creates runway shows for high tech fashion designers, and MakeFashion Edu brings the magic of wearables design and exhibition to students, integrated as both academic projects or as stand-alone programs.

Neighborhood Earth

Neighborhood Earth represents our outreach efforts and community activism all around the world. In 2011 James entered China as a manufacturing engineer, found that locals highly valued education, and started free classes for factory workers. Since then, James and Carrie have held free classes in Brazil, Germany, Canada, China, the U.K., and the U.S.

Productions

SteamHead Productions publishes our stories, hardships and triumphs that we experience while implementing design thinking and maker-mindsets in schools around the world. We do this to inspire those attempting changes in their own communities, and to show how Making Great Things creates platforms for student voices to be heard.

STEAMHEAD ONLINE COURSES

We believe a degree of online learning is here to stay forever, we have reallocated a bulk and time of resources in bringing our content online for free. This in fact has created positive affects due to the fact we can reach more teachers and they can build on our materials.
